The Gender Card | Designed Journalism Piece
This journalism feature was inspired by the 2017 New York City mayoral election, the first election since 1997 to feature a female candidate in the running. Upon further research I discovered that NYC had never even had a female mayor, which prompted my investigation into New York's gender politics. As part of my reporting, I reached out to and spoke to various experts including Dr. Jennifer Lawless from American University, and Leticia Remauro, who was the campaign manager for candidate Nicole Malliotakis. In keeping with a style I had used for a previous journalism piece, I gave the story a visual component, adding illustrations, data visualizations, and infographics to convey the story at a quick glance - so that theoretically, one could skim the story first, then read the entire written piece in detail if they were interested.
